Hi - it's possible to store this setting in a project template and then base projects on that template. This will then ensure that the option is always available for projects based on that template. The fact that this option is not available by default is that many customers would like to prevent merging of segments, so it's off by default. But it's easy to activate once, save this in an updated template and then use that template as a basis for projects.

I guess it will more user-friendly to allow segments merging through selecting the segments, right click on them and choose merge segments, instead of activating this feature from "project settings" first.
Hope this feature be integrated in the coming updates.
