SDL Studio 2017 performance. GroupShare. Server-based version

Hi, I've been using Trados since 2003 and I beleive I am qualified enough to say that SDL Studio 2017, which we installed in late December 2017 when SDL was "proudly" encouraging everyone to migrate to the new" enhanced" version, is the worst thing that has happened to me in my professional life in terms of technologies. It is an extremely raw and underdeveloped product on all counts.

1. Very slow performance. and I mean it. Very-very slow. SDL development team has confirmed to us that Studio 2017 is much slower than Studio 2015. And "they will be looking into it". When, how fast and to which outcome this "looking into" will lead, no one knows.

2. No target search in concordance. Search by target has always been critical to the quality of our translations. it worked perfectly well in Studio 2015. Well, now it does not. The development team has confirmed, again like they did for the slow performance issue, that this is a bug and "they will be looking into it". Again, nothing is promised.

3. Very poor, very weird and very slow concordance search. More often than not, the concordance window would not give any matches when the cursor is on the new segment. However, the matches are there if you search for them manually. Again, this issue has been raised with SDL but no adequate response has been provided.

With the above three greatest flaws of the Studio I feel as if I am wandering in a dark room with no light and no trace of the matches accumulated in my TMs earlier. This product is destructive to the performance of my entire department. It is a real shame!

If anyone is thinking about using SDL Studio 2017, my advice is think twice not to regret it later.

  • Hi Tatiana,

As you are aware you have logged your support requests via your local Reseller and these are being worked on with them.

In regards the slow performance issues, we have provided the answers via your local Reseller and we are waiting on further information from them to escalate this so that our support team can look to see if the performance issues you are experiencing are general issues or issues specific to you and your set up.

The concordance search is a known error and it is with our development team for a fix which is planned to be released in the next CU update for GroupShare 2017 - again this information has been provided to your local Reseller.

For the other issues you have raised via the local Reseller, work arounds have been provided from SDL to your local Reseller as what you have requested is not currently a feature of Studio.

    Hi

I'm sorry you're having a poor experience at the moment, but I think it makes sense to qualify comments like these.  Not everyone is going to experience the same issues you have experienced.  Certainly I would agree that 2017 is more sluggish than 2015, which starts to bring home the potential problems when you have solutions that are only online.  Even though Studio is offline I do think it's suffering with teething problems as we introduce many new improvements to the software that start to use more online components.  Fortunately not everyone is having the same experience as you.

I'm sure the teams will find a resolution to these issues you are experiencing and release the appropriate fixes as they become available.  Combined with any investigation the support teams are doing with you to make sure there are no issues that reside on your side things can only get better.

    Regards

  • Hi Fran,
Thanks for your prompt response via the community board. However, none of the things you've mentioned above helped us to find any workaround. In my humble opinion, talking about teething problems for a product that is 12 months old is a bit of a stretch.
So far we seem to be acting as SDL software testers since we keep finding new bugs on a daily basis. This is totally unacceptable.
SO PLEASE do escalate these issues.
    Regards,
    Tatiana
  • Hi Paul

Thanks for your response. Like I said, it's too long a time for teething problems.
And it's about time SDL teams took corrective action

    Regards,

    Tatiana

  • Hi Tatiana,

could you please let me know, what versions exactly (Studio and GroupShare) are you referring to?

    thanks and regards,
