Figma Preview for Trados Figma connector not working on some files

I’m currently testing the Trados–Figma connector for a client.

One of the key features we’re evaluating is the ability to display translated text in real time within the Figma UI elements. While the Figma Preview feature provides this functionality when using Trados Team, we’ve noticed during testing that it frequently encounters errors that prevent the preview from displaying correctly.

I’d appreciate any insights into what data elements or conditions might cause the Figma Preview to fail, as well as any known workarounds for this issue.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Question improvement suggestion: Provide specific error messages or codes encountered during the Figma Preview process to help identify the issue more accurately.

In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:

    Hello,

Step 1: Ensure you are using the latest version of Trados Studio, as the Figma Preview feature works correctly in Trados Studio 2021 SR1 (16.1.4.4184) and later versions. If you are on an earlier version, consider updating to Trados Studio 2021 SR2 CU9.

Step 2: Check the specific conditions under which the Figma Preview fails. Common issues may arise from the structure of the files being processed. For instance, ensure that the HTML code in the CDATA section of the source file is valid and does not contain doubled angled brackets or other syntax errors.

Step 3: If you are using custom XML file types, be aware that the Preview does not work for these types if they contain HTML Embedded content processed with the Embedded Content Processor. Consider using a different embedded content processor, such as the Plain text embedded content processor, to see if that resolves the issue.

Step 4: If you encounter specific error messages, please share them, as they can provide more insight into the problem.

Step 5: As a workaround, you might want to test the Figma Preview with simpler files or different file types to determine if the issue is file-specific.

I hope this answer addressed your question. If not, please reject the answer, add the question improvement suggestion information, and click the RWS Community AI checkbox on the right to try again.

    Hi Ryan

One of the main reasons for the preview failure can be the phisycal size of the Figma design causing the export to fail, and/or the complexity of the content in the design, maybe some special characters, code or large images.

First thing to check is whether you receive a design to preview in Trados - in the Trados project, check the Files tab, and see if you receive an .svg file of the design. You can also check in Figma, and see if you are able to directly export the design as an svg file.

The immediate workaround for this (if it is indeed the size/complexity of the design), is to breal the design up into mutiple pages.
If the design cannot be changed, you also have the option to use the Generate Referance File option in the connector, while this does not provide a preview in online editor, it will provide the translator with a PDF file that they can reference directly.
