When I have completed a project, I don't usually keep all the project files but just the .sdlxliff file. I've found the solution myself now, in case anyone stumbles over the same problem and looks for solutions here. It was actually really simple: I didn't need to remove the language combination from File -> Options -> Language Pairs, but ADD it. For some reason, the language pairs in question had been removed, and that's why Studio wasn't able to open any files with those language pairs. Sometimes, things are so easy but you just can't see the wood for the trees! :-)
Cheers,
I've tried both, but to no avail... I really don't know what the problem is :-(

I meant I removed them from File -> Options -> Language Pairs as I was just testing to see if not having used that language pair before had an impact.

Can you try resetting Studio? Rename this folder (just add _old to the end or something, it's not important what you rename it to) and restart Studio:

c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14.0.0.0

Regards
Many thanks for looking into this. I'm afraid it all results in the same error message - Studio seems not to be happy with the language combination. When you say you removed every language, do you mean you removed all open projects? That's what I have done, and I cannot think of any other way to remove any language settings that Studio might impose, but unfortunately it makes no difference...
Thanks,
So open the file for translation from Studio as opposed to double clicking it. Or perhaps right-click and choose "Translate in SDL Trados Studio".

I removed every language I have from Studio and double clicked some sdlxliff files. They all opened no problem so I'm not sure how to reproduce your issue.

Regards

Paul
