Data error message when trying to open an xlsx.sdlxliff file

Good morning,

I imported an Excel file with 2,936 segments 2 days ago into Trados Studio by clicking ‘Browse’ on my computer and translating it as a single document.

I managed to work on the target file for the first time and to save my work (XLIFF file + project file with the same name).

I also tried ‘Save Target As’ and successfully got a bilingual target file.

Yesterday, I tried to open the file again in two ways from the Files tab in Studio - using the ‘Open for Translation’ pencil icon in the taskbar, and right-clicking.

Trados Studio interface showing a project with a file named 'toTranslate_Prep.xlsx.sdlxliff' in progress, with 10% completion and no file selected in the details section.

It took quite a while before I finally received the following message:

Failed to open ‘XXXX.xlsx.sdlxliff’

SDL XLIFF validation error: Data error (cyclic redundancy check) - see below

Error message in Trados Studio stating 'Failed to open toTranslate_Prep.xlsx.sdlxliff' with details about an SDL XLIFF validation error and data error (cyclic redundancy check).

I tried to start all over again (deleting file and project from Studio and computer, and importing new ‘blank’ xlsx.sdlxliff file).

It opened fine, and thanks to the translation memory, I was able to quickly find my initial translations.  However, after saving and attempting to open it again, I got the same data error message as above.

Just before this xlsx file, I should point out that I had worked in exactly the same way on two html files, and everything went very well.

What should be done?

Thanks

Marie-Anne

Question improvement suggestion: Provide the exact version of Trados Studio you are using, as well as the operating system and any recent changes made to your setup.

In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:

    Hello Marie-Anne,

It sounds like you're encountering a frustrating issue with the SDLXLIFF file. Here are some steps you can take to resolve the data error message you're experiencing:

**Step 1:** **Close all files** in Trados Studio to ensure that you can identify the problematic file without interference.

**Step 2:** **Check for file corruption**. Since you mentioned that the file opened fine initially but then started giving errors, it may be corrupted. You can try the following workarounds:

    - **Workaround 1:** Open the SDLXLIFF file in a text editor (like Notepad++) and check for any extra content after the closing `</xliff>` tag. If you find any, remove it and save the file.

    - **Workaround 2:** If the file is still giving errors, you can recreate the project using the same source file. Go to Projects view, create a New Local Project, and add the translation memory you used previously. This will allow you to pre-translate the segments again.

**Step 3:** **Disable validation**. If the error persists, you can try disabling the validation of SDLXLIFF documents:

    - Go to **File > Options** or **Project Settings**.

    - Navigate to **File Types > SDLXLIFF > General** and untick the option to validate SDL XLIFF documents before reading.

    - Reopen the SDLXLIFF file in the Editor view.

**Step 4:** **Remove comments**. If your source file is an Excel document, ensure that there are no comments present. Open the file in Excel, delete any comments, and save it again before importing it into Trados Studio.

**Step 5:** **Recreate the SDLXLIFF file**. If none of the above steps work, consider creating a new SDLXLIFF file from the original Excel file and then re-importing it into Trados Studio.

I hope these steps help you resolve the issue! If you continue to experience problems, please provide the version of Trados Studio you are using and any recent changes to your setup for further assistance.

  • I tried all the options suggested.

    - I closed all files and disabled validation.

    - I checked for any potential comments in the source Excel file (none).

    - I tried to open the SDLXLIFF file in Notepad++, but this does not work.

    - I tried to recreate the project from the same source file (from the Projects view, create new local project and add translation memory): same message again = data error (cyclic redundancy check).

    - I tried to create a new SDLXLIFF file from the original Excel file and then re-import it into Trados Studio. Considering that the source Excel file had been prepared so that tabs that should not be translated do not appear in Studio, I removed the unwanted tabs in the original Excel file and imported it:

An error occurred while using the XXXX translation provider. The requested data file could not be located.

  • I should point out that despite the above error message, the TM content was still propagated into the target, until it reached  a segment containing tags.
