I own Trados Studio 2022 SR2 - 17.2.12.19268, and suddenly I cannot handle some larger files, the following message appears

Error window showing a message: 'Unable to open EXIMM3-17_Training_SlideDeck_EN.pptx.sdlxliff'. Additional error details include 'System.OutOfMemoryException'.

Here's the complete xml version of the error

Question improvement suggestion: Provide a clear description of the steps you took before encountering the error, and specify if you have tried any troubleshooting steps already.

In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:

    Hello Eleonora,

It sounds like you're encountering a "System Out Of Memory Exception" in Trados Studio 2022 when trying to handle larger files. Here are some steps you can take to potentially resolve this issue:

    **Step 1:** **Check System Resources**

    - Open Task Manager (CTRL+SHIFT+ESC) and monitor your RAM usage. Ensure that no other applications are consuming excessive memory, especially browsers like Google Chrome.

    **Step 2:** **Clear Disk Space**

    - Use a system management tool to clear temporary files and free up disk space. This can help Windows build enough disk cache if needed.

    **Step 3:** **Recreate the Project**

    - Consider recreating your project using the XML V2 file type, which has improved handling for larger files. This can significantly reduce file size and improve processing.

    **Step 4:** **Increase RAM**

    - If you frequently work with large files, consider upgrading your RAM if possible. Additionally, ensure that you are using a 64-bit operating system to utilize all available memory.

    **Step 5:** **Check for Updates**

    - Make sure your Trados Studio is updated to the latest version. Sometimes, updates include fixes for memory-related issues.

If the problem persists after trying these steps, please provide more details about any specific actions you took before the error occurred, and any troubleshooting steps you've already attempted. This will help in diagnosing the issue further.

I hope this answer addressed your question. If not, please reject the answer, add the question improvement suggestion information, and click the RWS Community AI checkbox on the right to try again.

Why not, what have you checked to save us repeating things?

Most likely: the SDLXLIFF contains unusually large XML text content or is corrupted, causing the XML parser to attempt to allocate a very large string buffer and fail.

    • Does it happen with one specific SDLXLIFF or all files?
    • What is the file size of the SDLXLIFF on disk?
    • Is the file coming from Trados Cloud/GroupShare or a local project?
    • Do you have any third-party plugins installed?
I have a desktop PC with 1 TB of disk space and 32 GB of RAM, and it is almost empty. I bought it a year ago exclusively for work purposes.

The error usually doesn't mean “the PC has no RAM”.  In Trados Studio it more often means Studio’s process hit a practical memory limit or the file being opened caused an XML read to balloon in memory (very large file, pathological content (structured in a way that causes Trados Studio (or the .NET XML parser it uses) to consume an excessive amount of memory while reading it), corruption, or a plugin/filetype doing something expensive).

Trados Studio is still a 32-bit application so you could have 100GB RAM and it would not perform any faster.  This will change... 64-bit is in hand.  Saw this from the product manager a week ago:

    Daniel Brockmann:
Yes, this is in progress and I have recently personally seen a bilingual Excel file with 400,000+ rows open in an early x64 build with no more "out of memory" messages - more news in the course of the year... stay tuned...

So if your problem is a huge source file and nothing else the solution is in hand, and your new PC will benefit from this.  In the meantime you may have to look at breaking the file up into bite-sized chunks.  But first lets validate the problem.

    Hello Paul,

yes, all the basic checks were performed by me before trying to get a more specifical answer since nothing worked so far. Even unistaling and reinstalling, running a "fix" form control panel etc.

Does it happen with one specific SDLXLIFF or all files?

It happens with very large xliff files, in this case source format was PowerPoint

What is the file size of the SDLXLIFF on disk?

    +29.000 kb each

Is the file coming from Trados Cloud/GroupShare or a local project?

local project sent by PM in trados studio package

Do you have any third-party plugins installed?

    Yes, here my screenshot

Screenshot of the Trados Studio Plug-in window showing a list of installed plugins, including Filtro PDF, Post-Edit Versions, Trados Number Verifier, and others.

So if your problem is a huge source file and nothing else the solution is in hand, and your new PC will benefit from this.  In the meantime you may have to look at breaking the file up into bite-sized chunks.  But first lets validate the problem.

Unfortunately I'm a freelancer and I cannot modify the projects the PMs send me, I already contacted them but on their PCs the files and the package work just fine and they can't help me

This is useful information.  It could be that they are working with 2024 and you are on 2022 - but the fact they were able to create the project and create packages suggests file size isn't the main problem here.

Perhaps you can remove the plugins you have installed first - you do have a few there I don't recognise (Filtro for example) - and then try again without any plugins installed.

It might also be worth installing the trial for 2024 and see if this handles the projects without a problem?

I removed the plugins but the error is still there... No changes unfortunately

Where can i download 2024 trial? Can I install it without removing my purchased version? I'm working on other projects in Studio and i don't want to risk to lose the job progress
