Automatic "Cancel check-out" after running certain administrative tasks

Certain administrative tasks such as Word Count or WIP report require the checking out of the files to perform them. Once the task has been run, all files need to be checked back in to GroupShare manually language by language. This is tedious and error-prone

Can some changes to the checking out be implemented so that:

a) only tasks that require file editing, require file check out. Analysis and WIP report don't

b) if they do need check-out, can there be an optional switch to automatically check files back in (or cancel check-out) when the task is complete

    I agree, it is inconvenient to check out files just to run an administrative task on a file.  Considering your actual use case ("I want to be able to see the Work in Progress"; "I want to see an up to date Word Count"), don't you think it would be much more elegant to have such functionality in Project Server UI? Imagine dashboards for these types of information, or running a report from the Projects list in PS. It should be possible to filter for various categories and have PS present a WIP report in the web interface. I've suggested something like this already in a different post.
