Not Considering

Based on the conversation, it's best to set this to "Not Considering" as it is not realistic nor desirable to do a conversion between IDML to Word and back or then to PDF. It's best to stick to the same file format throughout the translation process and then output PDF as required at the end.

Export the translation of a Indesign File from Trados Studio in Word format

I receive Indesign files, in idml format, I upload them to SDL Trados Studio, and once translated I need to export them in Word format so that I can make the final editing, and then send it to the client. I do not have the Indesign software, therefore I can't open the export file if it is in idml-format.

    Yes, I will try Scribus; and I only rarely receive idml files, otherwise I would puchase the license. And this assignemnt I received has a simple layout. If it was a more elaborated one, I would have refused the job. The word idea was about being able to skip the PDF-Word conversion, but I see that it would not be worth the development as it seems.     Hi Susanne, yes, they are quite different, nontheless for some documents, that do not have a complex structure, I have used the PDF export (from Indesign), converted it into word and achieved a very similar result. Not ideal, but feasible for simple layouts.  I rarlely receive idml files, that is why I don't pay a monthly InDesign license. If I would work regularly with idml flies I would purchase it.  It wasn't a requirement, but from the PDF I could already see that in this case it was better to work on the idml file.     My experience with converting PDF files to Word using the Trados Studio capability leaves an excess of formatting marks, some of them spurious because of the approximations introduced by the image-to-text conversion software. I find that I have to prune the formatting tags, and also reduce the display of tags to the simplest marks, in order to gain a clear view of the text.

    Could you perhaps ask the client for the file in IDML format so as to preserve the formatting as faithfully as possible, while also generating the target file in Word as they request. Trados Studio processes IDML files as standard: Uunder File>Options, you have all the supported File formats.
