Is it possible to use fine tuned model of OpenAI in SDL Trados Studio 2024?

Dear all,

We have connected to OpenAI via the respective plugin and are able to use it in our translation projects.

Screenshot of Trados Studio showing the Translation Memory and Search settings with 'OpenAI provider for Trados' selected.

We are trying to fine-tune the gpt-4o-mini model to better meet our requirements. However, the model is not displayed in the dropdown list. My question is: Is it possible to use our own fine-tuned model in Trados Studio?

Edit Model Connection window in Trados Studio with dropdown menu open showing various GPT models including gpt-4o-mini, but not gpt-4o-mini fine-tuned model.

Thanks,

Chengle

"Question improvement suggestion": Please provide more information about the steps you have taken to fine-tune the model and how you are trying to integrate it into Trados Studio. Also, specify the exact version of the OpenAI plugin you are using.

In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:

    Hello Chengle,

Trados Studio supports the use of various machine translation models, including those from OpenAI, through plugins. However, the ability to use a fine-tuned model depends on the specific capabilities of the plugin and the compatibility with Trados Studio.

As you mentioned, you have successfully connected to OpenAI via the respective plugin. However, if your fine-tuned model is not appearing in the dropdown list, it might be due to the following reasons:

    1. The plugin does not support the use of fine-tuned models.

    2. There might be a compatibility issue between the fine-tuned model and Trados Studio.

    3. There might be a need to update the plugin or Trados Studio to a version that supports the use of fine-tuned models.

To resolve this, you can try the following steps:

Step 1: Check the documentation of the OpenAI plugin to see if it supports the use of fine-tuned models.

Step 2: Ensure that your Trados Studio and the OpenAI plugin are updated to the latest versions.

Step 3: If the plugin supports fine-tuned models and your software is up-to-date, but the issue persists, it might be a technical issue that needs further investigation.

Please note that while Trados Studio supports the use of machine translation models, the specific capabilities might vary depending on the plugin and the version of Trados Studio.
