In order to better understand the complex terms to translate (fatigue, tired, uncomfortable etc.) is the back translation translated several times (like in crowd-sourced projects where many people interpret the same thing) and then the median meaning, so to speak, is extracted? Is that how back translation works?

That's a great question. In this context that's not how back translation works. A separate linguist does a back translation, not the two linguists who did the translation at the beginning, and what we are really checking for is the equivalency. So is the meaning of the back translation matching the meaning of the original source? That's the key determining factor, and in a sense is how the translation is validated.
