It doesn't! Abbyy is a very comprehensive tool designed to handle PDF conversions with many sophisticated options. The PDF Converter plugin has basically used the Word API to convert the files to Word, but because we used the API we can actually do something Word cannot do and specifically handle the images. So we have done this to provide users with a better tool than we have ever had in Trados Studio for this purpose, but to be honest if you do this a lot and would like to have proper options then you should use a tool dedicated to this task... like Abbyy.
