What counts the most as experience for a translator?

I'm wondering, is it possible for someone e.g. who has higher education in life science/biotech, and at the same time bachelor in a foreign language? The experience in translating then would be the contact with the scientific language.

Hi Marta, 
 Requirements will vary depending on what company or role you're applying for, but you that's certainly possible. If you don't have previous translation experience, you'll find that you'll initially need to apply for more junior in-house roles, and freelance opportunities may be more limited at first. You may want to seek out opportunities to gain some practical experience in translation before you apply for a role as a translator, as that will allow you to add some experience to your CV and will help you when it comes to translation tests during the application process. Also be sure to read scientific texts in both your source and target languages so that you're familiar with the terminology. 
 At the end of the day, a qualification in a specific sector will be a great asset that will make you stand out against other candidates.
