Are translators entirely at liberty to edit every source text before post-editing? In case the answer is NO, what advice do you have for source materials that cannot/should not be edited?

As a general rule, translators should not edit the source text. If the source text contains linguistic mistakes that make it unsuitable for post-editing, a pre-editing step may be introduced. Pre-editing is the process of editing or modifying the source text to make it more suitable for an MTPE process. Technical issues with the source text (e.g. segmentation or tags) can often be solved before applying MT.
