How many years would you say it takes to become a competent Life Science translator?
This really depends, and is often determined by which area you work in, or which type of tasks you are performing. So clinical trials, medical devices for example... specific software UI projects, are you working with Trados Studio, Passolo? Competency really differs and sometimes even if you only work in translation, or only review, then you could still be really valuable colleagues for us.
So it could happen really fast. I have seen this with our interns who have a chance to work closely with the teams and in a few months they have achieved significant capabilities. So it doesn't need to be too long.
