There are certifications for software testing that are definitley helpful. We have a program in which we check the abilities when we're looking for native speakers. So there are certain crteria that need to be met when first of all qualifying as a native speaker. We run adaptation assessments... two different ones... one is very specific for the target language and the other is more general for the sort of things that you may encounter through the general use of Microsoft Office. Having a keen eye... having the ability to spot what's wrong... that's really what we want.
Most of our testers are vendors so we look for professionals to work with us; but then we also have Test Leads and there it helps to at least speak one more language to be able to identify languages just by looking at them. Not going as far as the European being able to distinguish between simplified and traditional chinese for example, but rather being able to tell the difference between Chinese, Japanese or Korean. Ths for a Test Lead is essential, and our Test Leads are Project Managers who manage the full aspect of testing that includes finding and managing the testers, managing the project, estimating the work, tracking the finances, working with project managers, working with the client. So communication skills, project management for Test Leads; and for Testers it would be the native speaking and ability to spot the issues.
