When is AI no longer a tool?

Oleksandr Bondarenko asked:

A question to Paul. Where do you see a border between AI being a tool and an independent player. In other words when do you think we'll have right to say that AI is no longer a tool but something more than that? What are the signs of it?

That s an excellent question! I'd like to think that it would always be a tool, but that may be naïve of me. It's a bit philosophical in some respects but I think the onus is on all us to ensure it remains a tool well under our control and that we don't allow the technology to become more than that.

I'd recommend anyone take a look at the Center for Humane Technology ( https://www.humanetech.com/ ) because I wholeheartedly agree with its mission and the need to ensure this remains a tool to benefit humanity and not replace it. I believe it will become more and more capable and we will find the tools it can provide becoming more and more able to work to an extent in isolation from our input, so it's us alone who will determine where that border lies and not the technology itself.
