Finding work as an in-house translator - Financial?

David Campbell asked:

Hello and thank you! I recently graduated with a Masters in technical and economic translation (Fr-En), but I have a background in creative fields (my Bachelor's is in theater). Do you think it's possible for me to find work as an in-house financial translator somewhere, or should I search in another field?

  • I think it's always worth trying. In most companies as part of the recruitment process you will probably be asked for a test, so the combination of your experience and your studies, with the results of your test will define how successful you will be. But you can definitely give it a go... it's a sector where there is work and good linguists are constantly needed. This is a sector where there are peaks of activity when regulatory deadlines approach there is a big rush where all companies need to do their work at the same time, so we need to increase our pool of vendors constantly. For financial companies it will be the same, they need linguists as well. I would say a background in a more creative field could be to your advantage as well, since you will probably have a sensitivity to creative writing and more marketing content, combined with financial it's a really good combination of skills to have. So give it a go!
