Freelance or only in-house in IP translation?

In the Intellectual Property translation teams do you also work with freelancers or only in-house translators?

  • Yes we do, we have a large network of freelance translators.  To become a freelance translator for us we would require the same kind of qualifications that we look for in our staff translators.  So a technical, engineering background is really important, and ideally someone who is able to demonstrate a number of years of patent translation experience too.  Obviously some language combinations are more sought after than others in our freelance suppliers.  It does also depend on our in-house translators as we like to make sure they are working at capacity first, and then surplus work we outsource to our freelancers.  But yes, for certain language combinations we do rely on our freelance translators.
