I am a student trying to use Trados for a translation project and it says I need an activation code which I don't have and when I try to normally log in with my subscription it tells me I need to 'activate the product'.

Are you a student at an approved Academic Partner? If you are your should be using this forum:
Your University should have provided you with a code to be able to access this. I can move it once you confirm and I'll manually add you if you are not already in there. The team can better support you in there.
