as far as I can see the SDK is only usable with COM. Are there any alternatives? Especially REST or SOAP?

Hi Marc,
We do have REST APIs for the SDL GroupShare 2014 SP1 product available and are expanding these as we release.
The current implementation allows User Management through REST API, as well as Project Publishing.
