this sounds like the SDK was not installed correctly - I would suggest to uninstall and install again.

The targets file the error refers to is for building proper plugin - but till now I never heard of case where it was missing after installing the SDK.

Do I need to have Trados Studio itself installed on my development machine for the SDK to work?

Yes you need Studio - SDK basically only delivers samples + small updates to Visual Studio, but all referenced dlls are in Studio installation folder.

Thanks for your response. I'm downloading and installing Studio 2011 now. It might be useful for SDL to make that requirement clearer as the SDK installer did not display any errors about needing Trados Studio installed, nor did the OpenExchange website state it  (that I could find anyway).

It's probably worth nothing that some other CAT tool SDKs like MemoQ studio don't require the installation of the parent app, and in fact ship their SDKs with a dummy app that can be used to test your plugins.

It's probably worth noting that the memoQ SDK doesn't come close to offering the extent of capability we do here, and also worth noting that you do need a license for Studio before the SDK is made available to you anyway.  I'm not sure this has been a problem encountered by anyone else yet... certainly on this basis there is no need to ship a dummy app to test plugins.  The dummy app for us would need to be a full blown installation of Studio... for memoQ it's simple because they don't offer much capability.

Thanks for your reply. In this instance, the SDK developer and licence owner are actually different individuals,  As far as how the actual feature sets of MemoQ and Trados SDKs compare, I don't know, but I think it would be useful for the Trados SDK installer to check for an installation of Trados Studio beforehand and notify the user if it doesn't find one, particularly as the SDK is shipped separately from the application it depends on in the same way the MemoQ SDK is , as opposed to say Alchemy Catalyst where all SDK dependencies are installed by default and the SDK is then enabled via a licence setting.

Actually I agree with you here Eric.  I'm sure someone in the SDL SDK Team will be reading this and can comment if appropriate, or maybe implement this check.
