I assume you created an empty project using the SDK since there is no way you can create such a project in Studio. Problem is not with your plugin rather is the empty project which is not what Studio is expecting. For each enabled translated provider Studio is verifying if it supports the configured language pairs. If no language pairs are configured it will consider that the translation provider is not supporting the "language pairs" and show the message which you received.

In fact I was trying to add it to the standard 'Default' template in Studio interface: File > Setup > Project Templates > Edit... (Default)

The default template comes with a language pair defined which is English -> French. You might still receive this message if your translation provider doesn't support that language pair. This is checked via SupportsLanguageDirection from ITranslationProvider. So in conclusion you might get this message because of 2 reasons:

1. No language pairs defined in your template/project.
2. SupportsLanguageDirection returns false for the pair you have defined on your project/template.
