There is no such feature but you can version you plugin and custom develop something show the version in your plugin screens or in the ribbon if you would like. This way you at least have a way to identify which version is installed.

Thanks for the advice. This is the pragmatic way to go....

You could also do what Gerhard did for the Glossary Converter (drop him an email and he can explain).  He has a built in update notifier.  So when he updates it the users are told as soon as they start the application and can go and get the new one.
