Does anyone know whether it is possible to insert text at the cursor position in the EditorController? Is there any reference in the SDL Translation Studio integration API for this?

Yes, it is possible to get a handle on the current Selection of either the Source or Target from the Active Document, but you can only update the target selection.
Search for ‘Using Trados Studio EditorController’ from the Integration API Documentation or you can find a very complete example of how to manage the document event handlers from here: http://producthelp.sdl.com/SDK/StudioIntegrationApi/3.0/html/14650ca8-3ddf-4738-867b-aada11258ac4.htm
Once you have a handle on the active document, then you can access the current selection.
