Is there way to make SDL Trados Studio show translation memories before, loading machine translation results?

A lot of large machine translation systems are rather slow and as most translators are mostly in a hurry we got, a lot of  even angry reviews from using machine translation plugin, although the results of the system where judged useful by the translators themselves. What they asked was to make the regular translation memories load before the system translation. In exact or near exact match cases this is very useful.

Is something like that possible?

If not I would strongly suggest to consider such a scenario.

  • I hope, I understood what you mean but this is exactly what Studio does. If you select an automatic translation provider (such as Google Translate or BeGlobal) in Studio, Studio will - when you place your cursor in a segment - do a lookup in your active TMs first and only if it does not find a match it will send a request to the AT provider. This means that the TM matches have precedence and if one is found, you will not get any suggestion from AT.

  • Hi,

As best practice I would recommend to address this via batch pretranslation. By this I mean that you could use batch pretranslation to put in both AT and TM matches (with TM matches preferred) in batch rather than interactively. This then allows you to remove the AT engine(s) from the interactive editing and only use TMs there. In this way you get the best of both worlds - AT being applied to no matches in pretranslation, and faster TM access during interactive editing.

    Hope this makes sense,

  • how would this be done? I am using ITranslationProviderLanguageDirection ( SearchTranslationUnitsMasked method) and translates the text using ITranslationProvider. But it dose so only during translations and in the pre-translation it only seems to check language directions but dose not actually pre-translate it. Is there a method/class that I must implement to achieve this?

  • Hi Daniel,

I was going through this blog. Actually, when we use the studio API, pretranslation works fine with TMs but does not talk to google translate when there is no match. Do you whether the 'batch pretranslation' you mentioned above will help? If yes, how can implement this using Studio APIs in my .Net code.

  • Hi lsantos,

As I mentioned I'm not a deep expert in all things SDK/API so would be great if others could potentially chime in to help? I can see the "NoTranslationMemoryFoundAction" member in the Translate class and would think that if you have set up a cascade with a Machine Translation provider then that you could use that member to define what happens. I cannot see the syntax required for applying automated translation though.

    Thanks,

    Daniel
