Rich desktop applications like Word and Studio indeed have this very useful and sophisticated functionality. In the browser, this is a bit trickier, as it is just not quite as rich in all such details. I believe there are AutoCorrect plug-ins (third party) for the browser that can do some of this, but they might not be fully robust and as sophisticated as Word or Studio, as the browser is just not a word-processing app. The idea has been partially delivered by providing useful shortcuts like indicated in the previous response, but they might not work in all cases. For double quotes, you can indeed select the text and then press Ctrl+Shift+5 to insert curly quotes around the selected text - which can be quite handy.

But as you say, this is not automatic.

When looking at browser extensions, for instance, there is one I found called "Instant Smart Quote" which promises to do what you need. Perhaps it is worth looking at this option also and try it out in Online Editor.

I understand that currently these marks have to be inserted via a shortcut or the ribbon, in pairs - which is different from the ask of autocorrecting to curled/long, as happens in Word etc. 

Having to add in pairs is very cumbersome given that translators are now postediting rather than typing the content from scratch.
