Idea Delivered

This is available with Trados Studio 2024 CU1 that was recently released.

Create lite version of Trados Studio that can borrow a license from Trados Enterprise

It would be helpful if there was a version of Trados Studio that could borrow a license from Trados Enterprise while a linguist works on a project locally. This would help with issues in the Online Editor due to project size and also network limitations in certain locations. We have a large number of concurrent licenses for Trados Enterprise, so it would be nice to enable our linguists to better work with our translation projects. Other tools, such as Phrase, include a desktop application that can work in that is connected directly to the Phrase cloud TMS.

  • We have that, it's called "Premium Editors" internally, and grants access to both. I think the challenge is that you purchased Online Editor only licenses.
This is more a commercial than a product question, so is best discussed with your Account Manager. I'm sure this can be solved commercially without a problem.

  • Hi Luis. A customer has to pay for the OE licenses, so why not enable a customer to let those licenses be used both online or borrowed for a project for the desktop application? The OE still has a lot of growing to do so giving the ability for a customer's linguists to have flexibility would help bring more parity between TE and other cloud TMS solutions.

  • Hi Russell,

Trados Studio can be offered in Freelance and Professional editions, which offer significant value. This can either be purchased by the linguist, or by the Customer.
We commercially have "Premium Editors" which gives access to both OE and Trados Studio for one price.

Compared to our competition, we invest significantly in the linguist experience, to ensure linguists are actually productive, can deliver quality and are happy working with the tool. This ensures linguists actually want to work with our tools and makes it a USP for us.

As such, as a Product Strategy, we will not devalue the editing environment by offering it for free, as this ensures we can continue investing in the leading linguist experience.

  • Hi Luis. It was clarified what was released, but this is not a delivered idea. A customer should not have to buy separate licenses for Online Editor or for Studio Lite.

  • Hi Russell, I believe in the meantime this has been clarified with your Account Manager. If not, let me know.
