Display language or language code instead of flags

Many users have reported difficulty working on projects that have a large language scope because of the way the target languages are displayed. Since they may not be the most acquainted with country flags, they often find themselves having to hover over flags just to display the language. This can be a cumbersome task.

Is there any way or plan to display the language or its BCP 47 language code xx-XX instead in a project?

Apart from the benefits of easier reading, I'm sure this also solves some unintended political issues related to how some flags are currently used and represented.

  • I fully support this idea. UX research I've seen states not to use flags when trying to show what languages you offer on your website, so it would be nice for clarity in TE. We find it confusing as well where some languages have flags and others are just a gray rectangle with only the 2 letter language code and not the 4 letter code. It is hard to tell from a high-level if it is zh-CN or zh-TW without hovering.
