The SDL Trados Studio client should always synchronize and retrieve updates to a server-based project of SDL Trados GroupShare.
Can you please check with our Support team why this didn't work in your case?

GroupShare 2017 Server Projects should synchronize with local copies of projects.

When a server project is checked out for translation, GroupShare does not synchronize the server instance of the project with the PM local instance, for example.

Only the project on the server and the checked out project being translated are synchronized, when the translator saves his/her work.
