This has been delivered in Studio 2021 - it's now possible to customize date, time, number, currency and measurement formats, including the position of the currency (before or after amount).

Autolocalisation of numbers

When I translate from Polish into English I have lots of numbers written like this: VAT amount 19.372.500,00 EUR (80.965.463,40 PLN). I do realize that it is not the correct format but this is the reality. While I can set up the Studio to treat the numbers as placeables, I cannot set it up to change the numbers into proper English format, that is, VAT amount EUR 19,372,500.00 (PLN 80,965,463.40). This creates a huge amount of additional manual work (several hundred numbers every day). Terminjector and other SDL OpenExchange apps did not help (or did not even work on software server version). Begging for a solution.

  • If you have as many number, just leave them as they are in your translation. Then run a simple search&replace using regex.

    You can just replace all digits separated by a comma with digits separated with a hash, then replace all digits separated by dot with themselves separated by comma. In the end replace hashes by dots.

    The only drawback will be dates - but these can be found quite easily - either double digit followed by dot followed double digit followed by dot and followed by double or quadruple digit.

    The problem with all automatic corrections is, that the source must have the numbers all perfect and exactly as the norm for the source language says, ie for Polish a non-breaking space is expected for thousands separators, while most people use a normal space or a dot. As the machine is not a human being and will not detect such errors. From my own experience I remember once spending a whole day on a Word document correcting thousands of numbers. Next time I used regex in Studio and it took me just two hours or so to do the same. And at that time I knew just less then the basic of regex.
