Currently it is not possible to handle embedded content in an XML file when it's contained within an attribute value. I think it would be a good idea to enhance the filetype so it covered this pretty common scenario. The only sensible workaround at the moment is to use the CleanUp Tasks application from the appstore, but this is not good enough.
