How often this happens? Does it happen by mistake or is there a use case that people should change metadata schema of many pages?

There is a technical complexity in implementing this functionality: fields in different schemas, even if they have the same XML names have, have different namespaces. More to that, we might end up in the situation, when fields in different schemas may have the same names, but be of a different types.

Retain content in page metadata when changing page templates

When creating a new or editing an existing page, the system should allow the author to change page templates while keeping any text currently entered into common metadata fields. Currently, if an author fills out metadata fields and realizes the wrong page template has been selected; when the author changes the page template all the text previously entered into the metadata gets cleared and the author has to fill in everything again. It would be most efficient if any metadata fields that are common between the page templates retain already entered text.
