Differences between BaccS Desktop and the "new" software (read service)

Hi everybody ...

May I know what the differences are?
I have bought BaccS desktop a few months ago ... Now I want to understand if this software will work in 2022 or it will be impossible to use ...

For instance ...

Is the new service a standalone application? Or is it just a Trados Plugin?

What will be with my BaccS Desktop after 3 years from now?

Thank You.

Pietro

  • There will only be three versions going forward:

    • SDL Trados Business Manager Lite
    • SDL Trados Business Manager Team
    • SDL Trados Business Manager Online

The BaccS Desktop single user licence is no longer available to new users.

SDL Trados Business Manager Lite: this is a plugin that is fully integrated into SDL Trados Studio 2019 SR2 and above.  It provides a complete invoicing/quoting system for Freelance translators and is available through the SDL AppStore and the SDL Trados website.

SDL Trados Business Manager Team: this is a standalone product for small teams that supports the sharing of a single database if it's saved in a location on a server where multiple users can gain access to it.  It also uses a network licence which removes the need to have named users for all the available licences.  The minimum sale is three licences and it's only sold by contacting your account manager if you have one, or by going through the online chat here (sdl.com/businessmanager) where you will be contacted to discuss your needs.

SDL Trados Business Manager Online: this is an on-premise product installed on a server so that users can work with it in a web environment through a browser, and/or by using a Team version of the desktop client.  The minimum sale is ten Online licences and five Team and it's only sold by contacting your account manager if you have one, or by going through the online chat here (sdl.com/businessmanager) where you will be contacted to discuss your needs.

The Lite version has been enhanced to provide more features that might be useful for someone working as a freelance translator, and we will be happy to consider any others that should be there for this scenario and we can put them intoa future release.  The main point being we think that the direction the product has gone, with all the features we have added to it, make it overly complex and unsuited for the sort of tasks a professional working as a translator would need.  So we have tried to address this my reducing that complexity and improving the capability of the plugin accordingly.

You can find more details of the changes here:

    https://community.sdl.com/product-groups/translationproductivity/business-manager/w/wiki/4729/what-s-new-in-sdl-trados-business-manager-lite

If you have purchased the BaccS Desktop directly from us you can of course carry on using it for as long as you like.  But if you would like to try the Lite version and see whether this would also suit your needs let me know and I can help you with this.  If you are interested in the Team version because you actually work like a small agency then also let me know and I can arrange for someone to assist you with this enquiry too.

  • Ok. Thank You Paul.
I've already contact my account manager. But I am a bit upset because I have bought my BaccS just a few month ago ... Are we sure the Team version will be a standalone version and You will not say later "oh, sorry; no more support" ...
By the way, I could wait a bit if BaccS will works these 3 more years ... It was suppose by the way an update release, tight? Will itbee delivered?

I'll wait from my account manager by the way; then I will decide.

    Thank You.

At some point in the future I fully expect the current versions of all our software to be out of support, but that's not the same as failing to provide an alternative.  So for as long as we are providing a Business Manager solution we will continue to support our users and offer an upgrade path along the way.

By the way, I could wait a bit if BaccS will works these 3 more years ...

The version you have now will work for as long as your windows environment doesn't change something that prevents it.  We won't fix bugs in that version, or enhance it, as we are not supporting it in that mode, but you have a perpetual licence so are free to use it for as long as you like.
