Preparing V5.3.44 to migrate to V6. What folder should I specify in "Default folder with work files"?

Hello, I'm trying to prepare V5.3.44 in order to migrate to version 6.

1. I open Settings.

2. I click on the 'Files and folders' tab.

3. I look at the 'Migration to version 6!' section. Everything seems fine, so I click on 'Prepare migration to V6'. A box appears asking me to check that I have backed up my database, etc. I click on 'Yes' to continue.

4. A window appears stating "Base folder for storing files is not provided. Please specify value in the 'Default folder with work files' field." I click on OK.

5. I try entering different folders (e.g. a folder on my Desktop, in My documents, in my BaccS back-up folder, etc.), and the message in point 4 above always appears.

Any help would be much appreciated. Is there a 'correct' folder to specify?

Many thanks!

Martin

Trados Studio settings window with 'Files and folders' tab open, showing empty 'Default folder with work files' field highlighted in red.

  • Hi Martin,

Please try to specify any value there. For example, C:\Translate. Or some folder in Documents, or anything else. V5 stored filed inside database. But v6 stores files on hard drive, and in database it will store only paths to files. This means smaller database size, and possibility to view files without opening TBM.

When you set a value, click Save on the toolbar before clicking Prepare migration. Should work I hope.

  • Hi Eugene, thank you for this. I eventually realised that I was able to export all data to a Json file if I exited the Files and folders tab, so I was able to import my database into V6, and I have been adjusting templates and layouts to match my V5 customisations. There are things that I don't like about V6, but that may be because it is new to me, so I will probably wait a short while before asking more questions or making feature requests!! I might even stick with V5, but at least V6 isn't scary to me now.

    Thanks again!

    Martin
