Importing termbase excel file to SDL Live

I'm trying to import my termbase that I built on the SDL studio, that is stored on my local pc.
that is, I'm trying to import the termbase to SDL Live.
I first created an xlsx file by dragging the termbase file to 'glossary convertor' which worked magically.
You can't just import a termbase directly as it is greyed out. So I tried creating a cloud termbase with the same name as my termbase on my local machine/SDL Multiterm. To do this, I click Resources > Terminology > I choose a Termbase name > Create a new termbase from scratch > then I enter and select all languages that exist in that termbase > Next > Next > Create;
The termbase now is created; I select this and now it allows me to import the local termbase from my pc; This is where i'm facing a problem.
I drag the excel termbase file, keep settings default and ''strict import' ticked. The next screen comes with the error "Record has invalid fields | Select a language as a matched field." next screen it says "In order to have a better match, specify the separator character used in your Microsoft Excel file."
Separator used for synonyms    |
Separator used for multiple values    /
For the record, I have added 'synonms' for a lot of terms on the termbase as a word could mean variety of things, depending on the situation (I'm sure everyone else is doing the same). On the Excel file, each synonm is written against the source word with a | symbol in between and some words also have a '/' symbol where I intend to write both words as a meaning of the source word
and that's it; I can't select next or anything further.
Error Message: "In order to have a better match, specify the separator character used in your Microsoft Excel file."
Help from the community would be greatly appreciated!
  • I suggest you take a different approach because I think the problem you are facing is that you created a termbase in the cloud that does not have exactly the same definition as the one you created using the glossary converter via excel... so it can't map the entries into the right place  So do this:

    1. delete the empty termbase you created in the cloud

    2. open your termbase in MultiTerm and export it using the default export definition:
Screenshot of Trados Studio showing the Termbase Viewer with an arrow pointing to the 'Export Entries' option.

    3. then save the "Definition":
Screenshot of Trados Studio's Termbase Viewer with the 'Export Entries' dialog open, displaying various export settings.

    4. Now you should have two files, *.xml and *.xdt.  You may have a log file too but you can most likely delete that if you didn't see any errors so far.

    5. Now go to Language Cloud and create a new termbase using your "Definition" file, the *.xdt:
Screenshot of the 'New Termbase Wizard' in Trados Studio's Language Cloud with the 'Use a Termbase Definition' option selected and an 'Upload' button.

    6. This will create the termbase exactly as you had it in Multiterm.  So don't change anything, just next next next create and you're done

    7. Now you have an empty cloud termbase you can import the terms using the *.xml file you exported from Multiterm.  This contains all your terms in exactly the right format to match your definition:
Screenshot of the 'Upload file' dialog in Trados Studio's Language Cloud with options to 'Overwrite' or 'Keep both' duplicate entries.

    8. And that's it... all good with the small test I ran through to create this post:
