Is there a way to automatically add Draft segments in Trados Studio (2024) to cloud-based TMs?

Is there a way to automatically add Draft segments in Trados Studio to cloud-based TMs?

The idea is that draft segments could be shared between 2 translators even before they get signed-off by the reviewer. Currently we need to do this manually by using the Update Main TMs batch option and select Draft segments box. But is there a setting somewhere that would upload them automatically in the same way that 100% and CM Matches get uploaded automatically?

  • Hi

One option would be to use the default shortcut Ctrl+Shift+U to save the translation into the TM as you're moving between segments. You can change this shortcut under Options > Keyboard Shortcuts > Editor > TM Window.

However, once it's saved you won't be able to easily tell whether this was a draft translation originally or a fully reviewed one, just with a glance. The only benefit to this method I described is that it won't confirm your segment, just saves your TU into the TM, so you can see that the segment is not yet confirmed in your file.

But if you would not want to confirm the segment just yet, meaning that you would want to get back to it to edit it further, why would you share it with your colleague? Wouldn't you want to share instead your confirmed translations with them?

So I'm not sure if you mean "draft" segments the same way Studio means it, referring to the segment status. Do you mean instead maybe translated but non-reviewed segments?
Because if so, as you are translating the file, going between the segments, once you confirm a segment (provided that the TM is set to update), the segment content will be added to the TM, you don't have to run a TM update separately (it's rather a good finishing task in most cases). Your partner will be able to leverage the content then pretty much right away this way too.

To add to this latter method, one thing you might want to consider (if you are not working with this setup already), to use a "working TM", that you update with translations as you go along, and a "reference TM" so to speak, that only contains reviewed translations and you use read-only in the translation step. This way you can share all non-reviewed content with your translator colleague easily without risking adding non-reviewed, non-final content to your main TM.

    What do you think?

Which scenario were you thinking of?

    Best wishes,

  • Hi

I mean the draft status (translated but not reviewed) in Studio.

The idea of uploading to the TM in Trados Team is around that 2 translators could be translating similar content in different projects at the relatively the same time and they could share the draft translations until the reviewer has proof-read both projects and approved the translations for both.

  • Hi

Thank you for confirming the scenario.

In this case I would suggest the second option - use a shared "working TM" that you update with your translations as you go along confirming the segments in translation mode (so that other translators can leverage the work too) in conjunction with a "validated TM" that is read-only in the translation stage, and which the reviewer would then update in the review stage.

    What do you think?

    Thank you,
    Greta
