HELP! I just bought Trados Studio and I am trying to import a TM (.tmx) file created in Wordfast Anywhere, into the online platform and it is not working.

I just bought Trados Studio and I am trying to import a TM (.tmx) file from Wordfast into the online platform (I don’t have access to the Desktop version for the moment, as I am traveling, working from a Mac computer).
So far, I have created a new TM, using the Dashboard according to the instructions. Unfortunately, when trying to import my .tmx file (which is less than 5 MB), the program tries to upload for hours - I even let it run overnight, and not a single translation unit has been added, and then I get an error code. Same when adding a Termbase.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
In advance, thank you for your help.

"Question improvement suggestion": Please provide the exact error code you're receiving when trying to import the .tmx file. Also, mention the version of Trados Studio you're using and the operating system of your Mac computer.

"In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:"

    Hello,

It seems like you're having trouble importing a .tmx file into Trados Studio online. This could be due to a variety of reasons, but let's try a few troubleshooting steps:

Step 1: Check the format of your .tmx file. Trados Studio supports .tmx files that are in the standard TMX 1.4b format. If your .tmx file is not in this format, you may need to convert it before importing.

Step 2: Try reducing the size of your .tmx file. Although Trados Studio can handle .tmx files up to 5MB, sometimes reducing the file size can help with import issues.

Step 3: If you're still having trouble, you might want to try the workaround suggested in the context. Open the .tmx file in an XML/Text editor, search for "<br />" and replace it with nothing (leave the Replace with field empty). Save the changes and try importing the file again.

Step 4: If none of these steps work, it would be helpful to know the exact error code you're receiving. This can provide more insight into what might be causing the issue.

I hope this answer addressed your question. If not, please reject the answer, add the question improvement suggestion information, and click the RWS Community AI checkbox on the right to try again.

The error mentions a validation exception, so the first place to start would be to take a look at the TMX itself.  Can you copy the TMX and save it with a different name so you can mess with it in safety.  Then open it in a text editor, delete all the trans-units apart from two, or three (objective is to get an innocuous test file), and then attach it to your next reply.
If I were to hazard a guess the problem is most likely in the header, but share the file as I suggested and we can take a look.
If you don't want to do that then try exporting a TMX from Trados Studio, take a look at the header, and then make sure that the one you are trying to import has the same fields... just make sure your language is ok.

  • Hello Paul, I cannot attach the file as requested, (won't let me insert file?) so I will just add it this reply. Let me know if you see anything different in the header. Appreciate any help you can provide.

ok - I didn't have a problem with your file.  I made sure it was well formed, and removed the blank lines, but otherwise made no changes at all.  I put my file here... give it a try:

    en-fr.zip

I wonder if you messed up your file in a text editor somehow?  Anyway, try the one I attached in a zip and see if you fare better.  If it works you will need to look deeper ate your actual file and try to find the problematic parts.  Might be worth checking with this tool as a start:

    https://www.maxprograms.com/products/tmxvalidator.html

If it still fails after that I'd be happy to take a look at your actual TMX if you can share it with me?  Send it to pfilkin at sdl dotcom

  • Hello Paul

Your file worked great! But I can't seem to download the tool you recommended. I will work on it a little more tomorrow and get back to you if we don't find a solution.
