Trados license from agency

Hi, everyone! I'm relatively new to the translation industry, so I have a question regarding Trados. A very well-known translation agency remotely installed the desktop version of Trados on my PC when I started working for them. It's a perpetual license. I'm guessing I'm free to use it for projects of other agencies as well, right? Confidentiality is guaranteed since only I have access to the files. Though I don't actually own the license, I can now say that I use Trados when an agency asks, right? Thanks in advance.

  • Hi

If the agency installed Trados Studio on your PC and provided you with access under their perpetual license, then as long as that license remains active and they don’t revoke it, you technically have access to the software on your machine.

All translation work you do in Trados is saved locally on your computer (unless you’re working with a cloud-based project or server), so from a technical standpoint, only you have access to your files.

The key point is that the license itself belongs to the agency, not to you. So how you’re allowed to use it depends on the terms under which they granted you access. Some agencies allow freelancers to use the installed desktop version for other clients, while others restrict usage to their own projects only. It would be safest to check your agreement with them or ask directly to avoid any licensing or contractual issues.

    Hope this helps!
