I am new to Trados and trying to set up my first translation. I am getting an understanding of the translation memory and termbases, but when one is just setting up for the first time, do you have to translate the first document by hand in order to build the translation memory?
Yes there would be needed to create a translation memory and add it to your project and as you translate the TM will populate. Now there are several ways to populate a TM
1. translate and as you confirm each segment with CTRL+Enter you will populate your TM with translation units.
2. Use the alignment function in case you have documents translated outside of trados studio and import them into a TM in trados studio - https://www.trados.com/solutions/translation-alignment/
3. If you have a freelance or a professional version then you can use the free NMT plan at your disposal and use this alongside your local TM in order to enrich your TM locally - https://gateway.sdl.com/apex/communityknowledge?articleName=000013229
4. you can use certain free apps - like my memory etc - for this you also need a freelance or professional license purchase.
