Adding terms from alignment?

I am using align to inport TMs into Trados. To create consistant terms I would like to be able to add terms to my termbase as I check each alignment. How can we make this possible? Why is this different from the normal translation process wherein I can save both TM and terms to my termbase?

  • Hi

Once you align the documents there are the SDLALIGN files which can be imported into a translation memory in Trados studio . The TM contains entire segments (phrases) and their corresponding translation , If you need to create also a Termbase - meaning just simple words and their corresponding translations - glossary or dictionaries of terms then you can use the old documents and there are 2 tools that you can use .

1, you can add old document in trados studio and then use the Project Term extract app - https://community.sdl.com/product-groups/translationproductivity/w/customer-experience/5344/projecttermextract

    2. If you want to use the docs outside of Trados studio - then you can use the Multiterm extract app -https://appstore.sdl.com/language/app/sdl-multiterm-extract/1165/

Once you have extracted the terns based on your selected criteria (term length, frequency etc) you can use the SDLTB create in your translations alongside with the translation memories you have created after aligning documents.

    Hope this helps

  • In addition to the useful tips from it' worth noting that you cannot add terms to your termbase directly from the alignment editor.  However, you can save the bilingual alignment file as an sdlxliff after aligning your files, then open the sdlxiff in the Studio editor, attach your termbase and add whatever terms you wanted from there.

But essentially I agree... it would be very useful to be able to attach a termbase to the alignment editor so you could correct the source, or target terminology using your termbase as you align the files.  This way the final translation memory update would contain the correct use of terminology.

I think it's nice idea to add here:
