Best practice for saving TMs

Several questions (all relating to the same issue)!

  1. What is the best practice for the location where the TM is saved?
  2. I was saving my TM on a network drive, but the response time was slow, and I often had the message “database locked”. Would it be best to save the TM on my local drive?
  3. If this is the case, what is the best practice for backing up this TM?
  4. Is there an app I can use? Is the use of OneDrive recommended?

  • Hi

What is the best practice for the location where the TM is saved?

For the TMs there is always highly recommended to save copies of them in an external memory drive or on a cloud solution. So if you are using the local TMs which are saved on your PC , please make sure you regularly save some copies in an external memory drive .

The TMs work best if they are on your PC but you can always save their copies on a could solution as well. Any cloud storage solution that you use would be ok.

At the following link  https://docs.rws.com/binary/813470/866388/trados-studio-2021-sr1/sdl-trados-studio-translation-memory-management-qsg?  you can also find a PFD showing the best practices related to Tms.

    Hope this helps

    1. What is the best practice for the location where the TM is saved?A1: On a dedicated network drive or local to your machine. C drive being an example that is both dedicated to you and local.
Failing that, in an environment that is equipped to manage repetitive request and commands to the TM databases - meaning Trados Live / GroupShare
And by moving your file based TM's to these environments, the nature of the databases will be up scaled to better manage the demands and responses made to the TM's
    2. I was saving my TM on a network drive, but the response time was slow, and I often had the message “database locked”. Would it be best to save the TM on my local drive?
A2: This is to be expected. You can try https://gateway.sdl.com/apex/communityknowledge?articleName=000005098

    3. If this is the case, what is the best practice for backing up this TM
    4. Is there an app I can use? Is the use of OneDrive recommended?
A 3 +4:  When it comes to file based TM backup - there is an app for this called Trados TMBackup: https://appstore.sdl.com/language/app/trados-data-protection-suite/936/
If you do decide on GroupShare or Trados Live, RWS will manage your TM backups
