SR3 disaster

Thank you SDL! After months of waiting for upgrade that would make Studio Freelance fully usable on Windows 10 / Bootcamp / iMac 5k late 2015 (I think it was in september I contacted you and was promised upgrade) you ruin my Studio. Only thing I get after installing your SR3 upgrade is "There is a problem with the installation. Studio cannot be run. If the problem perstists you will need to re-install Studio."

I have already run the upgrade twice and still nothing. Any advice?

And by the way - am I talking to SDL specialists here or a customer forum???

Hello all,
my SDL Studio pro version is working perfectly with SR 3 - but I had installed the SP 1 for Windows 10 a couple of months ago. Sometimes one has to deinstall all and must do the installation a second time. The raisons I saw in the past were outdated .net-Versions or broken connections to installation directories. Sometimes one has even to do first a repair of the windows installation. My hint would be to do first a check on your windows installation to be sure that the problem isn't there. If the problem comes from Windows you will never be able to install Studio properly without fixing Windows before.

Just curious. What is SP1 for Windows 10? There's no such an update. You probably mean SP 1 for Windows 7, which came out back in 2011. FYI, in Windows 10 they (Microsoft) no longer talk about Service Packs (SP) but of "Builds", the latest one, at least what I have in my computer, is 14393.693, which appears as [Version 10.0.14393] with the command "ver".

Hi Ozzie,

The different terminology used to describe what is (has been) essentially the same thing is confusing sometimes.

Is it an update? a cumulative update? maybe a service pack? or was it a service release? or just maybe a patch?

However, since Windows 8 and especially true now of Windows 10, MS are not just fixing bugs and patching the software up, but are adding major new features to their OS and updates.

Normally Windows 10 'updates' are automatic and since yesterday apparently, the latest Windows 10 version is 'Windows 10 Version 1607'.

I'm sure I even read somewhere that Microsoft will not ever actually release a NEW version any more- but continually update/upgrade.... Windows 10

Paul, is this the SDLTradosStudio2015_SR3_5262R.exe which is on FTP?
Funnily enough, it's exactly the same yesterday's file (with the same yesterday's timestamp) which failed to install here... and of course still fails.

If it fails for you Evzen then the problem is something else. I received a list of configurations that were all tested successfully by QA yesterday after you jumped the gun. We double checked again today after your post and did not have to make any changes at all.

Have you tried the article I pointed you to yesterday?

Copying Fasil Aziz so he's aware of your problem too.

I didn't try that article yet, was waiting for potentially fixed installer.
Thing is, I did not have any problem with updates so far, all installed perfectly fine. I have 2011 - 2017 installed, all latest versions, except 2015 where I had to go back to CU6 due to the Newtonsoft JSON problem.
(hmmm, the only thing I can think of is that I installed (and updated) 2017 since the last 2015 update... could it be that the 2017 installer did something with the registry records needed by the 2015 SR3 installer?)

Okay, creating the registry keys made the SR3 installer working.
What I find quite weird is why 2015 installer looks for 2011(!) uninstall keys... Can someone elaborate on it in more details? By the nature of my work appreciate more technical details than just "run this magical utility and all will be fine" what may be satisfactory enough for common translators.

Hi, I'm not sure what you are referring to about 2011 uninstall keys.

The issue was that the broken SR3 installer wrote a registry key to the wrong place (under studio5 not studio4). The fix was to write the required value into the correct location.

This was a shared package tracking issue.

Some of the Trados 2007 components are shipped along with studio still for people that need them, these are handled in a separate MSI that is common to all versions of Studio. The suite utility tool corrects an issue with a previous version of the installer in that it was not treating it as a shared package. So it would have been possible for one of the versions of Studio to be removed and the shared 2007 components would have been uninstalled breaking any other versions still installed.

The registry key above seems to be some sort of workaround that the support team added as the tool must fail in some scenarios.
