Deactivation failed

I have a problem moving on to using Trados Studio (2014 freelancer) on a new computer.

I tried to follow the instructions on moving the licence to another computer by first deactivating the software on the old computer, but this is the error message I received: Deactivation failed. Cannot deactivate license. - The computer no longer matches the information stored with the license. This may be caused by a cloned system.

I have been using the software on this computer since the beginning, and I DO have a valid license. All I can think of as a potential cause is that in November the hard disk failed, and it had to be replaced with another one. In the rescue operation they managed to save all the data to an image file, which was then restored on the new physical hard drive, and I was able to continue my work as if nothing had happened.

Now I have a new computer waiting so that I could continue working with Trados on that computer. Can you help me resolve the issue?

  • Hi Janne,

Invariably 'copying' the Studio installation data from one system to another will fail, because the system ID's no longer match.

However- all you need to do now is to activate Studio (1) on the new machine is simply reuse the available activation code that is in your SDL account (Licenses).

Once activated, wait half an hour, refresh your SDL account and then you can reset the 'lost' activation through the Return License function (2)

Please remember- as you have the PLUS license, you always have TWO activation's- so can install on two PC's or have peace of mind that a second activation is readily available if you need it.

  • Hi Again! As you suggested, I tried to activate the software on the new computer and then wait for half an hour to restore the license. I downloaded the software on the new computer, opened Studio and then copied the activation code, only to receive this error message:
Cannot create license. We cannot complete this activation because the license is still registered by SDL for another computer. Check that the deactivation was completed on the other computer...

So this is the deadlock I'm in at the moment: unable to deactivate the license on the old computer, and unable to activate on the new one. Please tell if there is a workaround for this situation.

So I'm wondering if doing this offline would make any difference?
