update download for 2017 had WINrar pop-up box

I recently purchased an upgrade to SDL 2017 Freelance. When I downloaded the upgrade from the SDL website, there was a pop-up dialogue that would not allow me to open the upgrade unless I downloaded WiNrar. I went to that website, which did not appear to be designed by any professional organization, although I did not click on anything on the website. I ended up deleting the download while in safe mode and starting again with the installation attempt. After that second attempt, the next time I turned on the computer it would not connect to the Internet. I have taken the computer to a technician who has the computer once again connected to the Internet but he has said that there is a system problem with the software that may require complete re-installation of everything, including the Windows 10 program. Has anyone experienced this problem? Any advice?
I have run scans for malware and viruses and they are clean.

    Hi ,

    It sounds to me as though this is a prompt from something on your machine and nothing to do with Studio. WinRar is a tool for opening various filetypes and if Windows didn't recognise the upgrade file then it might have suggested you use WinRar. I would only expect to see this if you had WinRar on there in the first place though, something that I have seen with new computers for example as it gets bundled as trial software.

    Thank you for getting back to me. I have found some of your other articles online helpful also.
    My initial impression was exactly what you explained above, which is the only reason why I clicked on the dialogue box instead of deleting everything immediately. The box did not take me to a Microsoft website. It took me to a page with a lot of blue headlines suggesting I should click there for more information because there was no real information on the page and there was also no identification as to who the company was. It looked like the type of page that IT department heads warn people about. It did not appear on my second attempt to download 2017. I have SDL 2011 which I have had to install and reinstall various times and I had never seen it there.
    I update my Windows software at least weekly. I don't understand why I would be getting dialogue boxes from an updated system when Microsoft no longer offers this software (I did check on the website).
    My general impression was that this is some type of malware and if users see it on a download, they should not even bother clicking the dialogue box, just delete and try again.
