Upgrade from Studio 2011 to 2017 - backward compatibility

Question

Hello, 
 I plan to upgrade from Studio 2011 to 2017 for installation on a new computer. Will Studio 2011 still run on my OLD computer after that? I am asking because some of my clients use Studio 2011 and I am not sure of backward compatibility.

If you upgrade, then you lose the right to retain your 2011 licence as it is returned in your account in return for an advantageous price on the new version. However, if you don't deactivate the licence in the product then it will continue to operate for as long as you don't deactivate the licence, or change computers, or rebuild the operating system for example. 
 
So technically you can do this. But if you want to guarantee the old licence will be permanently available to you then you should purchase a new licence and not upgrade. 
 
Backwards compatibility should be fine for translation. So if you created the SDLXLIFF files on 2017 then a 2011 user would be able to open then and translate them. But they would most likely get warning messages about filetypes not supported and quickinserts not being available. These can be ignored and they can return the SDLXLIFF to you, but they won't be able to create a target file from an SDLXLIFF that you created from the original source file. 
 
If you didn't really mean backward compatibility. So if you get SDLXLIFF files created by your client, then it'll be you who gets the warning messages (depending on the source filetype). But you can translate and return the SDLXLIFF files without a problem.

 In your particular case, you are currently running Studio 2011 but do have an upgrade to 2014 available (not yet processed)- 
 Before you can upgrade to Studio 2017- you MUST process the upgrade in your SDL account first (the upgrade path would then be from 2014 FL PLUS to Studio 2017 FL PLUS). 
 You will then be able to retain your legacy Studio 2011 license until one of the exceptions is met in the above article after which case the 2011 version will be permanently disabled.
