I have downloaded all the files but am stuck here. The installation does not go beyond this. The installation of MS Visual C++ does not complete. No error msg, it just goes on and on for hours? Any clue ??

There could be a number of reasons for the paused install-
The very first thing I would check, is that you are logged in as ADMINISTRATOR (and not on a simple user account).
If you are logged in as administrator and the problem persists, then this could be down to a corrupted installation file (possibly caused by your AntiVirus software).
The following article (Microsoft) explains the most common errors and the solutions. (maybe still being used by another process)

Hi again,
Ok, have activated the View option but still no Installer directory in Program files/Microsoft Visual Studio. Have searched other directories named Microsoft Visual Studio in case it is hidden somewhere else and only found 2 (Microsoft Visual Studio and Microsoft Visual Studio 8) but no Installer directory inside.
So am still stuck...
