How to license SDL Trados Studio 2017 with a SDL Trados Studio 2019 single-user license key?

Hello everyone!

In case you are the owner of a SDL Trados Studio 2017 single-user license key and you are about to upgrade to 2019 version note that you will still be able to use Studio 2017 software after the upgrade. The following Knowledge Base article will show you how:

  • Hello,
I went tthrough several posts and articles (including this one above), but I still cannot activate both freshly installed 2017 and 2019 versions of Trados Studio FL on my computer. Here's a summary of what I did:

I have deactivated my Studio 2017 FL license online, upgraded license to 2019 on my SDL account page, and formatted the computer (for other reasons). Then, I downloaded and installed latest versions of 2017 and 2019 Studio FL and Multiterm, on this order. Tried to activate license on 2017 and got a message saying that license belongs to a different version. Tried activating license on 2019 and it went through. Went back to 2017 to activate with same license, but still could not do it.

After reading your post, I thought maybe the order of activation was wrong, so I uninstalled everything and installed again. Tried activating license for Studio 2019 first, and it went through. Then, I launched Studio 2017 expecting to get the screen you posted about (activated under another product's license), but got the "trial version" instead. Tried to activate and got the same message that license belongs do a different version. So, to summarize, my 2019 version is active, but my 2017 version does not go pass the trial version.

Could you, pls, help me here? What did I do wrong? Should I do this in another order? Should I leave Multiterm out until everything is licensed?

    Thanks very much in advance
    Best regards

  • Hello ,

First of all i can confirm that you have upgraded your license correctly in your SDL account. This means the 2017 activation code is no longer available and that you now only have Studio 2019 activation code available.

Now all you need to do is ensure that you have both Studio 2017 AND Studio 2019 downloaded and installed on the same machine.
Once installed- please open Studio 2019 ONLY- when doing so - you will be warned that the Studio 2019 application is in TRIAL mode OR that you need a license to continue-
In either case- please select the Activation option- then copy and paste the Studio 2019 activation code (begins with e4c....).
You will then see a message that activation is successful.
You can now open Studio 2017 (which relies on the 2019 activation code) and or Studio 2019 and work as you wish.

  • Dear Steven,

Thank you very much for your prompt help.

I have uninstalled everything and reinstalled Studio 2017 and 2019 twice. It's the same machine, of course. :) First, time installed Studio 2017 first; second time, after reading your response, I installed Studio 2019 first, then 2017, then open and activated 2019, then open 2017... and still got the trial version and not possible to activate with the upgraded license. This time, I left MultiTerm out, to avoid possible biases.

I've even cleaned the PC using CCleaner before I do the second installation, to prevent any "residual" information that could be impairing the licensing process.

I don't know what else to do...

I could have downloaded the installation files before I upgraded my license on the website. Do you think this could have any impact?

Is there any file or plug-in I could look for on the hard-drive that could be missing?

    Thanks very much
    Best regards

  • Good morning,
I would appreciate some support here, since my trial period for Studio 2017 is progressing. I have installed and unistalled studio FL 2017 and 2019 in several orders, as mentioned in my posts above, but could never get he 2017 version get past trial.

    Any other tips?

If not, could you, perhaps, revert the upgrade of my 2017 license, so that I may validate this version and install and validate the 2019 version?

    Many thanks

  • Hello ,

Please refer back to my original reply from the 3rd January.
It appears that you want to activate Studio 2017 and Studio 2019 separately- this is NOT possible as you have 'upgraded' the license.
To run Studio 2017- you must have installed Studio 20419 on the SAME machine where you have 2017 installed.
Assuming you have installed 2017 and 2019 on the same machine- simply open Studio 2019 activate- and now you should be able to open 2017 with no issues.
If there is still a problem - simply deactivate 2019- wait a few minutes and then reactivate (only 2019) and the issue should be resolved.

  • Dear Steven,

Both versions are installed on the same laptop, as mentioned in one of my previous replies to the feed.

I have made a video of myself following your instructions, where you can see that Studio 2017 does not get activated upon activation of Studio 2019. Tried it with only one version open at a given time (as instructed), but also with both versions open at the same time.

Please, check below and let me know what else I should do.

    Thanks

    Best

  • Dear Steven,

Could you please help me here? My Studio 2017 "trial" is about to expire and I still cannot activate it. Please, read my posts and please watch the video, so that you see that my problem is not due to not following your instructions.

    Thanks very much
