Uninstalling old versions of SDL Trados Studio

I'm about to install my upgrade to Studio 2019 Freelance Plus. I still have all of my previous versions installed on my Windows 7 computer -- SDL Trados Studio 2011 through the currently active version, Studio 2017. I understand the old ones are deactivated, but it is important that the old Studio applications should be uninstalled from Windows? What about folders, TMs related to the old applications? Thank you!

  • Hi

It isn't obligatory to removed previous versions of SDL Trados Studio before or after you install the latest version but, unless you will need to use any of them in future, it makes sense.

You can remove them via Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall (right click menu or top toolbar) > Remove suite of products. I don't recall if 2011 had that element (Remove suite of products - this appears in the programs list with the rest of the Studio/MultiTerm program components) but each version from 2014 up does.

You can continue to use older versions of Studio so long as you don't uninstall them. There are limited reasons why you might need to but if you don't know those then they don't apply to you. If you still have licenses for any of them, release them or you won't be able to reinstall at a later date. If you have no separate licenses then once you've removed them you won't be able to reinstall.

Removing any versions of Studio does not remove projects, translation memories or termbases that you used with them.

You should also remove any older versions of SDL MultiTerm as above.

Once you've removed the programs you might find the odd component is still present so remove any of those also via Control Panel.

Then it's probably a good idea to run a cleaner such as CCleaner to remove odds and ends from the registry for example.

Removing older versions should not affect the performance of the new versions of Studio and MultiTerm if they are already installed but if it does, then running a Windows Repair also via Control Panel>Programs>Repair (right-click menu or top toolbar) should sort that out.

If I haven't given enough explanation, please post here what else you need to know...

    All the best,

    Alison :)
