There are at least two ways, each of which is appropriate for an .xlf or indeed any Studio-compatible file format...

You can open a single file for translation

You can also create and manage a project which to my mind is much more useful. This link includes a video link for instructions.

Take a look at Getting started first, which gives you access to lots of guides and videos.
