My disappointing experience of upgrading from 2019 to 2021

Hi,

My first contact with Studio 2021 was somewhat disappointing.

1. The licensing management is excessively complex and counter-intuitive. Since, I purchased the upgrade from 2019 to 2021 from within my account, I would intuitively think the license number automatically appears in my license list, in SDL's Website. But it's not the case. I refreshed and refreshed my license page, sent a ticket, because I was not able to activate my version without a license number, continued to trial this and that, and finally tried the button "Update my licenses"! And it worked.
Why does not SDL's website automatically link my upgrade order to my account? I am sure I will not be the only one to waste time with that.
That adds to my long history (singe 2009) of license activating/deactivating issues. Why are always licensing management overcomplex with SDL? I never experimented such problems with any other software publisher.

2. Why, unlike any other software, a new version of Studio is not able to retrieve custom settings from a previous (and still) installed version? Due to the colossal number of options in SDL Studio, fine tuning those options and preferences represents hours. And in this case, a huge waste of time, when it should be so easy to have an option proposing to import the previous version settings? It's a big miss.

I hope I will not have to add to this list when discovering further that upgrade. Namely, does 2021 implement all the bug fixes and suggestions that were previously discussed in this forum? After having paid $231CA for an update, I think one can expect such improvements. I would not understand why I paid such an amount if I do not see any users-requested changes.

Regards

Philippe

  • Re adapt settings like any other software...

From what I have experienced in the past with MS Office, taking settings from previous versions is not that easy. If you consider Windows, MS Office, InDesign or many other products: which one does just so simply take the settings from the previous version?

In case of Studio many settings can simply be imported via user profile or project templates. Also the project list can easily be copied, if it is not adopted by S2021. This said, it can be really a problem, when you import settings from the past, as many things have changed. So it is indeed better to do a fresh start and create a brand new setup in S2021. This takes maybe an hour or so, not more. Important is always to export the current user profile just in case something goes wrong. This way you do not lose your settings,

  • Hi Jerzy,

Thank you for your answer. I was able to import Project Templates, but how do you import user profiles?

  • File -> Setup -> Manage user profiles

Prior to importing you must export the settings from your previous version.

However, please beat in mind, that this causes trouble, as mainly the file type settings have changed, so project templates should at least be once reseted for file types. And user profile brings some settings (like non existent plugins), which may cause Studio to crash.
